Mr. V. K. Sivappiragasam, an old boy, a former teacher and retired principal of Kopay Teachers' College, passed away recently (September 2005) at his residence in Vyapaarimoolai, Point-Pedro, Sri Lanka. He taught Tamil and Tamil Literature in the higher forms and served as the head of the Department of Tamil in the late fifties and early sixties. He had his Masters' degree from the University of Annamalai, South India, where he distinguished himself as an outstanding scholar so much so that he was nicknamed A+ among the academic circles.

At Hartley his contribution to the Tamil Dept. was very remarkable as he had the knack of infusing his love for the the study of Tamil both among the students and his colleagues. His assembly talks in Tamil were very interesting and witty.

He subsequently served as advisor to the national Institute of Education, Maharagama and a visiting lecturer at the Open University in Colombo. He ended up his career as the principal of Government Teachers' College, Kopay from where he retired.

Our sincere condolences are due to his wife, son and other members of his family.

I happened to his colleague both at Hartley and G.T.C, Kopay.
