    Music:G.V. Prakash (A.R.Rehman's nephew)
    Producer:Director Shankar

    • Movie: Veyil
    • Language: Tamil
    • Cast: Pasupathi, Barath, Bhavana, Shreya Reddy, Priyanka (debutante from Malayalam TV industry) and others
    • Music: G.V. Prakash (A.R.Rehman's nephew)
    • Cinematography: Madhi
    • Direction: Vasantha Balan
    • Production: Director Shankar's S pictures
Veyil is Vasantha Balan's directional venture. After Kaadhal, Imsai Arasan movies' success, Shankar has learnt that it is better to give a chance to his assistants rather than take risk by introducing some other director in his production. Full credit to Vasantha Balan and he has proved that he is no less to Balaji Shakthivel (Kaadhal fame).

Veyil is a story which does not rely on heroisms, punch dialogues, a separate comedy track, extravagant sets, double meaning dialogues et all for success.

Veyil relies on a strong story line, beautiful cinematography, best actors, good music.

    Story
Veyil starts with the childhood life of Murugesan (Pasupathi) and Kadhiresan (Barath) in a small village near Virudhunagar. Pasupathi is a movie junkie and is severely punished by his dad for bunking school and watching movies. His dad, a butcher by profession, beats him up severely and leaves him in hot sun for a whole day. Murugesan flees his house with his mom's jewels and a little money stolen from home. He reaches Thirukazhugunram where he spends and loses all the money watching movies. Nowhere to go, he stays in the cinema theatre and grows to become operator in the cinema theatre. Meanwhile, kathiresan (Barath) goes to school and is nursed by his parents and he starts an advertising company in his village. Every tamil movie must have a Villain and in this movie, it is Barath's ex-employer Bose. He is jealous of Barath's growth and tries to hinder it by all means. Meenakshi (Bhavana) is a college girl who meets Barath while recording for his adverts. Barath is shown as an arrogant and angry young man who forces Bhavana to record the way he wants. Director has not relied on a separate comedy track as Barath does this part well. A subtle comedy track to be precise. Pasupathi grows out to become the theatre operator and falls in love with Thangam (Priyanka) who is the daughter of a tea shop owner. Love blossoms between the two and they plan to get married. Pasupathi, in his Johnny style look, steals the show. He has once again proved that he can speak volumes with his eyes. The love ends in a tragedy with Thangam forced to kill herself and Pasupathi left stranded alone. Pasupathi starts drinking and is forced out of the place when the theatre is closed down. Pasupathi, on his mentor's advice, leaves for his home town. Barath builds his advertising empire and expands in a big way. The enmity with his ex-employer Bose also grows larger. Barath expresses his love for Bhavana which she accepts. Barath's life goes all his way with he winning big contracts for local advertising.

Pasupathi reaches his home town after twenty years and is chased away by his dad who does not forget the prodigal son's deeds. Pasupathi happens to meet his younger brother Barath and is brought home. Barath fights with his dad and Pasupathi is allowed to stay at home with his parents and siblings. Pasupathi happens to meet Pandiyamma (Shreya Reddy), his childhood sweetheart, and finds that she is left single after a broken marriage. Pasupathi finds nothing to do at home and at is not allowed to work at his brother's place. He feels like a unfit piece of a jig-saw puzzle. He is not shown love by his younger sisters or his father. He feels solace in Shreya Reddy's company. He fights with his emotions and thinks that he has wasted his life and has nothing to do. He yearns for the love which is showered on his younger brother Barath. Barath fixes up marriage for one of his sisters. Pasupathi is blamed and insulted for the loss of marriage jewels. The family comes to know that he is not the reason for it when the jewels are recovered. Pasupathi decides to leave the house and goes away from the family. Meanwhile, Bose plans to kill Barath and employs people for the task. Barath is attacked by villain's men when he goes in search for his brother. Pasupathi finds Barath amidst the pool of blood and comes to rescue him.

  • Will Barath survive the murder attempt?
  • Will Pasupathi save Barath and revenge Bose?
  • Will Pasupathi's father realize his mistake?
  • You got to watch the movie's climax for the answers.

    Music
Music is by G.V. Prakash Kumar, the 18 year old nephew of A.R.R. He scores well for the BGM and has churned out a few good ones in his debut. A good note is that one can understand the lyrics better

    • Uruguthey.Maruguthey: The melody by Shankar Mahadevan and Shreya Goshal is the best of the songs.
    • Veyilodu Urvaadi: The first song has a folksy touch and clear lyrics with voice rendering from Jassie Kift, Thippu and others.
    • Kaadhal Neruppin nadanam: A number with Karthik and Chinmayi coming in for the duet has some foot tapping beats.

Madhi, the cinematographer gets some credit for showing the dusty village and the scorching heat of Tamil Nadu summer realistically. The colours chosen for the different time eras are to be appreciated. One can really find his work in the Kaadhal Neruppin nadanam song. The fast movement and the adjacent colours add robustness to the melody.

Vasantha Balan has been choosy in his cast and does a good job in it. pasupathi is the hero of the movie with his known and awesome potential for acting. Either be it the romantic scenes with Priyanka or the scenes showing his brotherly love with Barath or the scenes showing his inner turmoils or the action sequence he proves that he can do magic with his eyes. Sabash to pasupathi!

Bhavana, Priyanka, Shreya Reddy have done their job well with their good acting skills. Barath, is getting more and more matured with his movies. After his success in Kaadhal and Emtan Magan he has showed that he can don any role and is different from the rest of the young actors in Kollywood. The good part is that he is trying to do a bit of comedy which most of the young heroes are trying to capitalise on.

Vasantha Balan has packed as many scenes as he can and has succeeded in making a good movie altogether. The second half slows down a bit. Some scenes involving Pasupathi's sentiments could have been avoided as one can hear people in the theatre complaining that the movie is over sentimental. The director has tried to touch down the baseline of relationships and feelings and he has succeeded for the most part of it. This being his directional venture, one needs to really appreciate the efforts to make a good film.

I felt really satisfied watching a very good movie after a very long time.

Veyil - The heat is on. A perfect watch for a movie lover.

SENCHOLAI FUNDRAISER AND CANCELLATION OF ANNUAL PICNIC EVENTS
We regret to inform you that we are cancelling the annual HCPPA picnic that was scheduled to take place Saturday August 19th in light of the repeated and horrible atrocities by the Sri Lankan armed forces, particularly Mutur massacre, Allipitty church shelling, and now the Sencholai bombing.

However, on the same day, between 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., we are organizing a fundraiser to help support rebuilding the Sencholai Children's Home in Mullaithivu. So, if you previously planned to attend the Picnic, please meet us in Toronto at the Downsview Dells Park (1661 Sheppard between Jane and Keels -- Click here for the map) and make your contribution to this deserving cause. Even if you cannot make it that day, you can send your contribution to our Treasurer, at:

    Mr. C. Manoharan
    48 Bethany Leigh Drive,
    Scarborough, ON M1V 2N7

Please address the cheque to Hartley College Past Pupil Association, and for the memo, please write 'Sencholai'.

Details of this fund will be published on the Hartley website and updated regularly.

    Thank you for your generosity.

    Synopsis:
Thambi is a portrait of an individual whose ruthless ambition and self-inflicted obession is to fight for the betterment of the society. What makes the movie tick is its eye-catching opening credit sequence, a self-concious visual style and some pretty head-on violence.

Seeman has not only showed his deftness in directing, but also his penning skills. He successfully maintains the movie's pace with sharp dialogues and perfect screenplay.

    Here goes the sotry...

Thambi Velu Thondaiman (Madhavan) is a man of fury and his rages comes to fore if he see any wrong around him. However, his revolutionary throughts drives him to reform bad guys rather than fight them.

He confronts Annachi alias Sankara Pandian (Biju Menon),a local don who is a terror to the locals. He decides to reform him.Archana (Pooja), a student of the college sees Thambi fighting with gangsters, and mistakes him to be a goon. However, she changes her heart after hearing Thambi's troubled life in the past.

After touching briefly on Thambi's past life, in particular how his entire family is killed by Annachi's gang, the film's focus is on Thambi and how he brings a change in Shankara Pandian's heart and mind.Meanwhile,Archana after knowing Tambi's true character, starts loving him. However,Shankara Pandian gets out of jail and hotly pursues Thambi to draw his blood. How Thambi manage Shankara Pandian is told in reviting climax.

With director Seeman on top form, Thambi finishs on high, but one lasting memory is the stunning performance of Maddy. He guides the film throughout with ease. Biju Menon, as Annachi essays his role with ease. Pooja gives the movie a passion that is simply enthralling. The supporting cast including Illavarasu, Vadivelu, Mannivanan and Manobala add value. Music from Vidhyasagar is average. Cinematography by Balasubramanyam captures the vigour and exitement in many of the scenes.Vikram Dharma's stunt scenes are commendable, and Mani Raj's art work is noteworthy.

Watching this movie, your heart srings will certainly be pulled.

Hartley College Benefit Movie Show 2006 - HCPPA Canada & USA

    Time:1:30 p.m.
    Dear Canadian and US Hartleyites:

Tickets:CDN $5 only; Tickets are available from all the current and past executive committee members.
    Movie:
    A B C D
Cast:Shaam, Sneha, Nandhana, Aparna, Vadivelu, Madan Pap, Kuyyili and Kulandai Subbaiah
    Director:Saravana Subbiah
    Venue: Woodside Cinemas
    1571 Sandhurst Circle
    (McCowan & Finch)
    Toronto
More Info: For further details please contact Convener Rudran Subramaniam (647) 404-3398 and V. Vijenthira (416) 877-8409
    Synopsis:
The movie has a powerful and emotional theme.

Kulandai Subbaiah, who is the father of the director, appears in a cameo role which is one of the highlights of the film. Saravana Subbiah plays the 'bad man' of the film, the rude, rough, overbearing, sadist husband of Sneha.

The movie is about a man who is loved by three different women. Anand (Shyam) is a bachelor, his landlord is Kulandai Subbaiah, an orthodox aging Brahmin; Chandra (Sneha) is the landlord's daughter. Anand is a polite, caring person, considerate to all, and liked by one and all. Chandra is impressed by him, and continuously compares him with her late husband (played by Saravana Subbaiah), who was a sadist, continuously humiliating and torturing her. After her husband's death, Chandra returned to her father's house; by her dress or behaviour, she did not reveal that she was a widow, since she felt free and independent after his death. She develops a soft corner for Anand. Kulandai Subbaiah plays his role of an orthodox aging Brahmin, worried about the future of his widowed daughter, to perfection.

Bharathi (Nandana) lives with her mother, sisters and brother, having been deserted by her father. She has an antipathy towards all males. While traveling in a crowded bus, Anand hands over his degree certificates to her while he is hanging on the footboard, and the certificates are left behind with her. She recovers them, finds his address, and delivers them to him. Coming to know Anand, she falls in love with him. But Anand calls it infatuation, and suggest that she should marry the boy who had already been approved by her mother.

Divya Daisy (Aparna of Pudukottailirundhu Saravanan) is an orphan, a ward of the church. She has an accident, Anand saves her, takes her to hospital, signs as her guardian, takes good care of her, thus saving her life. When he goes to church to return her gold chain, she is not available, and he does not meet her. Later, the doctor who treated her after her accident tells her how Anand saved her life. So she also develops romantic feelings about her.

Whom does Anand finally marry? What is the logic? What about the other two heroines? See the movie to find out.

This is a clean but serious family entertainer, the music is enjoyable, and the re-recording is done in a novel manner.

  •   COMMITTEE ACCEPTS A NEW PROPOSAL TO GET NAMES OF OFFICE BEARERS FOR NEXT YEAR PROPOSED EARLY

Proposal brought by the secretary to get names proposed and seconded with the consent of the candidate prior to the meeting on a prescribed form was accepted by the committee to be tried out this year. The secretary explained that the purpose is to give the candidates time to reflect and be sure that they can spare some time to serve in the committee. This he said will reduce members getting elected with little time for them to consider whether they can spare a little time for Hartley and finally resulting in absentia members in the committee. This procedure will not prevent anyone proposing at the meeting but even if they want to propose at the meeting they have to fill in the form. As mentioned earlier it was decided that those proposed should be members in good standing.
