Vythilingam Sornalingam, a welknown Hartleyite, died under Tragic circumstances in Vanni Sri Lanka on September 26th, 2001.

Mr. Sornalingam was a student of Hartley from 1959 to 1969. He had been staying at the College hostel during his school days.

Vaithilingam Sornalingam alias Shankar was born in September 1948. He was educated at the Tamil Maha Vidyalayam in Vavuniya and at the Hartley College in Point Pedro. A keen footballer, he played for his college and a club.(More by DBS on Frontline)
He was an outstanding sportsman. Represented Hartley college and Jaffna schools in Cricket and Football. Some of the goals he scored for Hartley were sheer brilliance and still cherish the memory of Hartleyites around the world. He participated in the atheletic events representing the Thamotheram house.

In another front, he rejected a lucarative career in Marine Enginnering and returned to the homeland to fight for the Tamil cause. In Novermber 2000, Mr. Sornalingam (Col. Shankar) accompanied the Tamil Eelam National Leader in the first historic meeting in the Vanni with Oslo's Special Envoy, Erik Solheim.
