A/L results out: 63 percent qualify for university

GCE Advanced Level Examination results released by the Department of Examinations yesterday showed 126,000 candidates had qualified for entrance to universities. The total number of candidates who sat the examination was 199,000 and 63 percent had qualified for university entrance.

The student who had scored the highest marks in the country, (the maths stream) at the examination was Nipuna Randunu Samarasekara of Ananda College, Colombo who had obtained 3.3439 Z score marks. Anton Cricus Jonniraj of Hartley College, Point Pedro was placed second with 3.2498 Z score marks and Binu Amaratunga of Nalanda College scored 3.2037 Z score marks to become the candidate scoring the third highest marks, the Commissioner General of Examinations said in an official statement yesterday. In the medicine stream the highest marks was scored by Maithili Sivapathasundaram of Saiva Mangeiyar Vidyalayam, Colombo 6, who had a Z score of 2.9388.

Madushi Maheshika Ranasinghe of Visakha Vidyalaya, Colombo with 2.9109 Z score marks was second and the third highest marks was scored by Madhusanka Perera of Nalanda College, Colombo with a Z score of 2.8496 marks, the official release said.

In the Arts stream the highest Z score marks was obtained by Namal Jayawardena of Rahula College, Matara with 2.5705. The second place went to Mihiri Hirudini of Sirimavo Bandaranaike Girls School, Colombo and the third highest marks was scored by Sampathmali Karunaratna of Pushpadana Balika Vidyalaya, Kandy.

In the Commerce stream the highest Z score was obtained by Malinda Ketipearachchi of Mahinda College, Galle, the second place went to M.M. Lanka Hansani of Sanghamitta Girls School,Galle with 2.7402 while the third highest marks was scored by G.K.Malsha Madushanika of the Nagarsiri Maha Vidyalaya, Hemmathagama, the release stated.

In the physical science and bio-science streams this year.s passes exceeded by 1,500 over the last year.s number, the release said.

  • Maths stream: Nipuna Randuna Samarasekera of Ananda College
  • Medical stream: Maithili Sivapathasundaram of Saiva Mangeiyar Vidyalayam
  • Arts stream: Namal Jayawardene of Rahula College
  • Commerce Stream: Malinda Ketipearachchi of Mahinda College
