The Past Pupil's Association of Hartley College, Point Pedro held a felicitation dinner at Taj Samudra Hotel recently to honour T.E. Anandarajah who has been appointed as Inspector General of Police.
GCE (O/L) - December 2000 Results
Seven Hartleyites Got Distictions in 9 Subjects.
The results of the G.C.E. Ordinary Level examination held last December reveal that in the Jaffna peninsula 29 students have obtained Distinctions in all the ten subjects. Hartley College Point Pedro though has missed the list of ten distinction passes has set a good record with seven students getting distinctions in nine subjects.
Eight students of Vembadi Girls college, five students of St. John's College, four students of Jaffna Hindu College and two students each from Jaffna College, Chavakachcheri Hindu College, Vadamaradchy Hindu Girls College respectively have obtained Distinctions in ten subjects.
The other leading schools in the outskirts of Jaffna town such as Union College Tellipallai, Uduvil Girls College, Ramanathan College, Methodist Girls College, Point Pedro, Valvai Girls College and Wigneswara College Karaveddy have one student with ten distinction passes.

Inter House Athletic Meet - 1999
The Annual Inter House Athletic meet was held on Saturday, July 03, 1999. Chief Guest was Mr. D. R. Arumanayagam (Eng); Assistant Director of Education. Mrs. M. Arumanayagam distributed the prizes. (NFH)

- Under 15: S. Sugunakumar of Paulpillai House with 27 Points
- Under 17: Y. K. Kirubaharan of Kanapathipillai House with 30 Points
- Under 19: N. Sutharsan of Thamotheram House with 30 Points
Best Achievements:
- Mr. N. Sutharsan of Thamotheram House has equaled the existing record(11.70-Sec) in U 19, 100 meters, and made a new ground record (23.90-Sec) in U 19, 200 meters.

- 2. 310% Points - Abraham House
- 3. 263% Points - Thamotheram House

111 students of 115, who sat for the exams qualified to follow GCE (A/L). This is a 96.5% passing rate. (NFH)

Mr. Markandu Kalakandan Passed Away
Mr. Markandu Kalakandan passed away while he was on
duty at the Colombo airport due to heart attack on
April 25, 1999. The funeral will be held on Wednesday, April 28th, 1999
in Colombo, Sri Lanka. For more information please contact:

Mr. Markandu Kalakandan was an old boy of Hartley College.
He was a popular soccer goal keeper and a popular cricketer
during his days at Hartley College. He had been working as
a Customs officer at the Colombo Katunyaka Airport.
AGM of HCPPA Colombo Branch
The 42nd Annual General meeting of HCPPA (Colombo) was held on
August 2nd 1998. Mr. Mahadevan (Chairman and Managing
Director of Pyramid Air Services Ltd.) was elected as President
and Mr. S. Balachandran (Accountant, Ports Authority) was
elected as secretary.
Mr. Ratnasingam Passed Away
Mr. Ratnasingam passed
away under tragic circumstances in India. He was
a distinguished old boy of Hartley College, a long
time citizen of United Kingdom and a past President of
HCPPA (UK Branch).
He was going to get the statue for the project dear to
his heart, Hindu Temple in London, when he met with
the car accident and died in India.

Prof. A Thurairajah Building
Hartley College embarked on a new building in
the name of Professor Thurairajah. The fund
for this building was donated by GTZ Germany, a non
governmental organization. HCPPA (Canada) also
contributed Rs. 100,000.00 for the land that has
been purchased recently. The construction of
the building has commenced and is in progress,
according to the reports from home.
The late Dr. Thurairajah, the distinguished Hartleyite,
had been a professor of soil engineering at the
University of Peradeniya, and finally the
Vice Chancellor of the University of Jaffna.

Arrival of the President of HCPPA (Point Pedro)
Mr. Nadarajasundaram, the president of HCPPA (Point Pedro)
is expected to be in Canada in mid November, 1998. Upon
confirmation of his arrival, a get together of members
will be organized. Mr. Nadarajasundaram is the
chief guest of the AGM and Dinner of HCPPA UK on Nov 07th,
1998.

Mrs. Selvarajah Passed Away
Mrs. Selvarajah (former Miss. Solomons) was one of those who died
when the Lion Air, an internal passenger plane crashed over
Jaffna Peninsula few weeks earlier.
Mrs. Selvarajah was a long standing teacher of the lower classes at
Hartley College. Many of the past pupiols here would have studied
under her. She was affectionately called 'Solomons teacher'. Later
she married Mr. Selvarajah. She was living in
Canada and has attended our functions. On behalf of all Hartley PPA (Canada)
we pass on our condolences to her family

It is believed Mrs. Pushpam Selvarajah...
It is believed that the retired English teacher, Mrs. Pushpam Selvarajah
was also a passenger of the Lionair flight 602, which went missing off
the coast of Mannar with its
full complement of 55 people on Tuesday(Sept 29, 1998) afternoon.
Mrs. Selvaraj had been living in Scarborough, Canada and visited her
home land recently.

Mr. Veenugopal - the new principal
Mr. Veenugopal, an old Hartleyite, is the new Principal at
Hartley. He took over from Mr. K. Nadarajah, who served Hartley
College for nearly 25 years till he retired.

Mr. Gunaseelan was arrested and later released
Mr. Gunaseelan, the Vice Principal, arrested on frivolous
grounds and later released. He has been transferred to Puttur
Somaskanda College.
Shortage of Class rooms in Hartley
Due to acute shortage of classrooms at Hartley College, some of the
classes are being conducted at old church, across the road and
at Methodist Girls High School.
